New Year, S.M.A.R.T. Goals


In the blink of an eye, the holidays have passed and the new year is here.

It’s time to focus on our goals for the new year, and the tools we can use to achieve these goals. First things first: Every health and wellness goal must have a solid foundation to work from and all goals must be SMART!

Specific – Measurable – Attainable – Relevant – Time Oriented

Let’s look at a couple of examples:

Goal – “I want to lose weight”
SMART Goal – “I want to lose 10 lbs by February 1st, 2019 to improve my overall health. I will do a weekly weigh-in and track my progress in a journal to stay on track.”

Goal – “I want to get in shape”
SMART Goal – “I will immediately begin exercising for 30 minutes, at least 3 days a week to help improve my strength and endurance. I will use my Burnalong app to schedule classes and track their completion.”

Great, your goals are set!

  • Use a Daily Planner. An article in Psychology Today describes the variety of benefits of using a planner. This includes helping “your physical health by tracking things like diet and exercise, you can schedule regular doctor and dentist appointments, and make sure you are getting enough fresh air and vitamin D by scheduling days spent outdoors.”
  • Prioritize Rest and Recovery. We all know how hard you work, and it is equally as important that you get the proper rest and relaxation time too (both physically and mentally). Take moments throughout your day for individual thought and meditation.
  • Apply an engaging health and wellness program. While there are a variety of options for health and wellness programming out there, many of the options fall short of what employees truly want and need. Be sure that your program helps to create the vibrant and inclusive culture that your employees will thrive in.
